SPRC Special Event

Saturday, November 5, 2011

8 a.m. – 6 p.m. CDT

We will operate K0AGF from the Minnesota Transportation Museum. Our station will be in the 80 ft. boxcar pictured above. The boxcar has electricity and climate control. We will have food and socializing. Plan to come and operate or just hang out. New hams are welcome also; the Special Event is a good way to get some operating experience. Think about assisting with setup Friday afternoon and/or take down after the event is over. Club members will have free admission to the Museum to use the restrooms and/or see the historic trains. There will be one station. Accomplished chefs Dale NØPEY and Joe KDØJCC will keep us well fed. Questions, contact w0qt@arrl.net.

Someone asked, Is a Special Event a contest? No, it is not a contest. It is an event used to celebrate or commemorate something, or to call attention to a noteworthy site, in this case, the Minnesota Transportation Museum. Our Special Event also will call attention to the St. Paul Radio Club. Some hams will check in and say that they’re just one for the count. Others, probably most, will be interested in the historic trains and will ask questions about the trains and the Museum. Information regarding the trains and the Museum will be written up in a notebook which operators can consult. The notebook will contain other information as well, such as operating protocol for the Special Event.

Look in the November issue of QST, or on the ARRL website  search on k0agf for the listing of the event.

Local contacts: We are using the Mining Club 3M repeater for 2m at the Special Event: 147.1200 Mz.

As of 10/11/11, there are openings in the operating schedule early and late in the day, and in the middle of the day. We are having one station. The ten-hour schedule is set up in half hour periods, although you may sign up for more than one period. Map and directions are below. Contact Orcy at w0qt@arrl.net or 612 827-2707 to sign up.

Hope to see you at the Special Event!

Directions & Map: The Minnesota Transportation Museum is located at 193 Pennsylvania Ave East, St. Paul, between Jackson St. and I35E.

The Pennsylvania Ave. exit from I35E is the first exit north, from where I35E splits from I94 near downtown St. Paul. Go west from the exit onto Pennsylvania Ave. You will see a cyclone fence on the north (right-hand) side of Pennsylvania Ave. enclosing a parking lot by a building. Turn into the one opening in the cyclone fence. The sign says “Jackson Street Roundhouse.”
