October Membership Meeting (everyone welcome)

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

7:30 p.m. - Socializing 7:00 p.m.

Room 155 Murray-Herrick Campus Center

 Program:

John Lyon, W9LHG:

Elecraft for Every Ham

Elecraft K3

October's program will be ELECRAFT FOR EVERY HAM, presented by John Lyon, W9LHG. The Elecraft K3 transceiver was introduced last year at Dayton. Since then, magazine and internet reviews - and word of mouth - have made the radio very popular, delivering outstanding performance at a reasonal price point. After a brief review of Elecraft and its previous products, the presentation will concentrate on the K3's features, and the rig in actual operation for the average ham. John will have his K1, K2, and K3 (serial #647) at the meeting for inspection.

John, the Left Handed Gorilla, really is Left Handed. He has been a ham since 1954, and Extra since '71. Mainly a HF CW op, John is stuck at country #96 toward DXCC at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, with 5 watts and a wire antenna. John grew up in Illinois, but has lived in the Twin Cities for the last 30 years. Married for 48 years to Virginia, they have three grown daughters. John also enjoys jazz and classical music, photography, and his lake place in Wisconsin.

Directions to Meeting: Take the Cretin-Vandalia exit from I94 and take Cretin Avenue six blocks south to the St. Thomas campus. Murray-Herrick Campus Center (MHCC), site of the meeting, is off of Cleveland Ave. South, which is two blocks east of Cretin. Enter the parking lot from Cleveland Avenue South, between Ashland and Portland Avenues. Go in the door at the end of the parking lot and turn right after the second set of double doors, then around through an open area to Room 155, on the 1st floor. Parking permits for the red and yellow lots on campus are not enforced after 6 p.m. on Fridays.

For a map to the meeting, see MAP TO MEETING under the meeting notice on www.stpaulradioclub.org  If there is a problem accessing the website, go to www.stthomas.edu/campusmaps/stpaul.asp and download the campus map.  The color version is easier to read but takes longer to download than the black and white version.  MHCC is # 5 on the map.  Room 155 is in the round section of the building, in the north end.

Be sure to monitor the club repeater, KØAGF, for talk-in help. 145.310 - no tone needed.

New Repeater Controller Installed

As of August 7th, the new repeater controller has been installed in the club's repeater (KØAGF, 145.310 no PL tone). Along with the new controller we are now running on a new 40A supply with battery backup. There is still work to be done such as setting up the autopatch, configuring DTMF codes, and adding "telemetry" sensors, however, we should be to the point where the repeater is working at least as well as it was before the upgrade.
